Workshop B - Tuesday 21st August, 2012, 5.30pm – 8.30pm
How to create a tertiary education going culture
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Universities are challenged with attracting low SES and underrepresented students, following the Federal government’s target to boost the number of low SES students participating in higher education.

This workshop will provide a case study of the In2Uni program which is run in partnership between the University of Wollongong and the Department of Education and Communities, Illawarra and South East Region. The In2Uni program aims to lift aspirations for tertiary education and build capacity in 55 schools in the region.

The program starts in year 6 and engages with students until year 12 and offers a range of activities, including Academic Mentoring, Leadership & Transition Workshops, on-site experiences, and online activities for students, parents and teachers in the program.

During this workshop you will explore:

  • Examples from the United States on various outreach programs run by Universities and in schools
  • Strategies for universities to work with schools and community groups to attract underrepresented students and create a tertiary education going culture
  • Participants are encouraged to bring their own case studies to discuss in the session
